Panel Upgrades in Forest Hill

We replace electrical panels that are out of room, overheating or built by makers with known breaker problems. You get a load calculation first, a clear plan for when the power goes off, and a new panel with every circuit labeled. Drop cloths go down before tools come out.

Knowing When an Old Panel Has Run Its Course

Every circuit in your home starts at the breaker panel, where the utility feed is divided up and sent out to rooms and appliances. A breaker exists to open the circuit before its wire gets hot enough to damage insulation. Crowd the panel with tandem breakers, undersize the service or let the bus bar wear, and that protection stops being dependable, often with heat building where nobody can see it.

Many older homes still run on 100-amp service. That was enough before central air, an electric range, a second fridge in the garage and an EV charger all shared the same bus. In a long Texas summer the AC alone can sit near the top of that capacity for hours, so adding one more large load can push the whole service past what it was designed for.

Not every problem needs a new panel. A single failed breaker or a loose lug is often an electrical repair, and a full torque and clean can catch connection issues early. We tell you which one your panel actually needs and show you why.

What a Panel Upgrade Includes

  1. 01

    Load calculation

We add up your existing and planned loads, including AC, water heater, range, dryer and any EV charger, to size the service. That number decides whether you need 150, 200 amps or more, not a guess.

  2. 02

    New panel and breakers

The old enclosure, bus and breakers come out. A new panel goes in with breakers matched to each circuit's wire gauge, plus AFCI and GFCI protection where current code requires it.

  3. 03

    Grounding and bonding

Your panel depends on a solid path to earth to clear faults safely. We test the ground rods, the conductor that runs out to them and the bond to your metal water piping, then replace any piece that is corroded or was never installed.

  4. 04

    Meter base and service conductors

If the amperage goes up, the meter base and service entrance conductors often have to change too. We inspect them and include the work only when the new service requires it.

  5. 05

    Permit, inspection and utility coordination

The paperwork is ours to handle. We file the permit with whichever office covers your address and book the inspector's visit. We also arrange with the utility to cut service at the start of the job and restore it once the work passes.

  6. 06

    A labeled directory

Every breaker gets a typed, accurate label. You will know which switch kills the kitchen counters without flipping half the panel to find out.

Signs Your Panel Needs Attention

  • Warm cover or a burning smell

A panel cover that feels warm, or a sharp plastic smell near it, points to a loose connection or a breaker arcing on the bus. Turn off what you can and book a visit.

  • Federal Pacific, Zinsco or similar

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip. Replacement parts are scarce, and swapping in mismatched breakers doesn't fix the design.

  • No open slots left

If every space is full and older work used tandem or double-tapped breakers to squeeze in circuits, there is no room left to add safely.

  • Lights sag as the air conditioner cycles on

When the lights in your home drop in brightness every time the outdoor unit starts, the service may be running close to its limit. A loose main lug can cause the same symptom.

  • Rust or water inside the enclosure

Moisture corrodes bus bars and breaker jaws. Rust streaks inside the panel mean water is getting in at the mast, the conduit or the cover.

How Panel Day Works

  1. 1

    Walkthrough and plan

We look at the panel, meter base and grounding, run the load calculation, and explain what needs to change and why. You get the scope and the price before anything is scheduled.

  2. 2

    Permit and power-off schedule

Once the permit is in hand, we pick a date with you and the utility. We tell your household how long the power will be off, so you can plan for the fridge, medical devices and anyone working from home.

  3. 3

    Protecting the house and yard

Drop cloths and floor runners go down from the door to the panel. Outside, we lay boards or mats over beds and turf around the meter so ladders and old equipment don't crush plants.

  4. 4

    Swap, test and label

We remove the old panel, mount the new one, land each circuit, torque every connection to spec and test the breakers. Then the directory gets labeled.

  5. 5

    Inspection and reconnection

The inspector reviews the work, the utility restores service, and we walk you through the new panel before we clean up and leave.

What Moves the Price

Two panel upgrades on the same street can cost very different amounts. The panel itself is only part of it. Most of the variation comes from what has to change around the panel and what we find behind the old one.

Amperage of the new service
Going from 100 to 200 amps usually means a larger meter base and heavier service conductors, not just a new box.
Panel location
A like-for-like swap in the same spot is simpler. Moving the panel out of a closet or bathroom, where current code may not allow it, adds wiring and wall work.
Condition of the existing circuits
Scorched wire ends, aluminum branch circuits or undersized conductors have to be corrected before they are landed on new breakers.
Code-required breakers
AFCI and dual-function breakers cost more than standard ones, and the count depends on how many circuits the code covers.
Grounding corrections
Missing ground rods or a broken water pipe bond add materials and labor, and they can't be skipped.

Panel Upgrade Questions

How long will my power be off?

A straight swap in the same location usually keeps your home without power for most of a working day. If we also change the meter base or move the panel to another wall, plan on a longer outage. You get the expected window before we pick a date, and we tell you right away if something behind the old panel changes it.

Do you pull the permit?

Yes. We file it with the office that covers your address and set up the inspector's visit ourselves. The utility won't reconnect a new service until the work has passed, so that step is part of the plan from the start.

Can I just replace one bad breaker instead?

Sometimes. If the bus is clean and the panel is a sound brand with parts available, a single breaker replacement is a reasonable electrical repair. If the bus is burned or the panel is a known problem design, a new breaker on an old bus won't solve it, and we will show you what we see.

Will a new panel let me add an EV charger?

Often it does, and that is a common reason people call. The load calculation tells us whether the upgraded service has room for a 40 or 48-amp charging circuit. If you plan EV charger installation, mention it at the walkthrough so we size the panel for it.

Do I need to be home during the work?

Someone needs to let us in and be reachable for decisions, and we like to walk you through the panel at the end. You don't need to stay in the room. We keep the work area covered and the path to it clear.
